Artist Biography

Basil El Halwagy creates drawings, works on paper, wearable art, and sculpture that explore connections between science and spirituality. The Arab-American artist of Egyptian parents was born in 1980 in Racine Wisconsin, and lived in Cairo, Egypt. El Halwagy’s childhood is rich with contrasts of growing up in both America's Dairy Land and the Land of The Pharaohs.

Multicultural experiences inspire El Halwagy to search and excavate beneath cultural differences and discover universality in the human experience. The myriad of styles, techniques, and media which he employs, echo the experience of traveling from one environment to another and quickly adapting to the properties or circumstances of a new situation. In an age of information saturation, and as an artist who finds himself caught between contradicting identities, El Halwagy’s recent work experiments with culture, image appropriation, and juxtaposition to explore how interconnectivity transforms confusion into meaning and empowerment.
